THE KID FROM NEW ORLEANS - Kid Ory and his Creole Jazz Band

THE KID FROM NEW ORLEANS - Kid Ory and his Creole Jazz Band
£12.99
CD / Product Number: URCD236

In 1956 Norman Granz (manager of Oscar Peterson and promoter of Jazz At The Philharmonic) suddenly became interested in the older generation of jazzmen still active and signed up Kid Ory for a series of recordings for his record label, Verve.
This new Upbeat CD presents a long unavailable Verve album, The Kid From New Orleans, together with two tracks from Ory's guest appearance at the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival and selections from a concert in Paris. The studio session which forms the basis of this issue is a beautifully recorded set: Ory's rhythm section was surprisingly modern in approach. Darnell Howard's rich-toned and fascinatingly original clarinet embellishes the well-known Ory band sound to delightful effect. Together with the forthright positive trumpet of Marty Marsala they produce an altogether enticing programme.
The bonus material is revealing: at Newport the Red Allen Band is an unusual setting for the old man and he makes a grand impression whilst the Paris concert has his band playing to the gallery. Ory's long-time drummer, Minor Hall, had fallen ill and was replaced by an American resident in Paris at the time, Kansas Fields. This gives the band an entirely different flavour and the excitement of the concert is captured marvelously in this new remastering.
